UK Water Hardness Areas
Chalky deposits at the bottom of your kettle or floating film in your hot drinks? Reduced water flow or boiler efficiency in your property? Stubborn orange stains in your bathroom? Water marks on your shower screens and faucets?
If any of these sound familiar, you could be living in an area with hard water and experiencing the effects of limescale build-up. Use our water hardness map to find out how hard the water is in your area. At a level of 100ppm or more, you could benefit from a water softener and say goodbye to Limescale for good.
Hard water contains a large number of dissolved minerals, predominantly magnesium and calcium. Although water is naturally soft when it falls from the sky, it gains it’s hardness after making contact with the ground.
The South East of England and London have particularly high water hardness levels, however Scotland, Ireland and Wales typically benefit from soft water - however, as more houses are built and water is sourced from alternative reservoirs and aquifers, the traditional water quality of an area will change.

Know your Hardness in Clark Degrees or GPG US?
Water Hardness can be measured and is normally expressed in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per litre (mg/l). This mean that water with 100 parts per million (ppm) of hardness will have 100 lumps of rock for every 1 million drops of water.
Hardness can also be measured in °Clark (Clark Degrees) or Grains per US Gallon (GPG).
- To convert from GPG to PPM: Multiply the GPG number by 17.1
- To convert from PPM to GPG: Divide the PPM number by 17.1
